Comments of the Preliminary Jury
Over the past few years, filmmakers seem to have slowly lost confidence as they watch a film market that doesn't seem to respond to anything they put out. We've felt a sense of empathy and urgency as we watched the boldness disappear from the few projects we've been given to screen. However, we couldn't find that fear in this year's NAFF submissions. It seemed as if everyone understood that the greatest opportunity for genre films arises when the dominant market trend is gone. There was a full slate of films representing a wide range of genres and cinematic tastes, including history, fantasy, thriller, science fiction, action, high-concept mystery, and more, with no overlap.

In terms of subject matter and characters, most of the films represented the voices and unconventional perspectives of diverse members of society. With such a diverse list of submissions, it was a challenge to establish a guiding principle for the judging process. In the end, we tried to accommodate a balance of works that drew the attention of all the judges despite their bold challenges, as well as works that captured the special attention of some judges due to their uniqueness. Therefore, not only the works selected as finalists but also those that were not selected are expected to break new ground in the stagnant cinema scene if they are made and found audiences. We salute the courage and brilliant imagination of all the applicants and look forward to seeing them all on the screen.
